Reading the Sidewall of a Tire
Tire Size Designation                                     
Section Width – “225”
·         Measurement is taken from sidewall to sidewall
·         Measured in millimeters
Aspect Ratio – “50”
·         Height of the sidewall                                                Tread Pros - Reading the Sidewall of a Tire
·         Percentage of the section width
Tire Construction – “R”
·         “R” indicates a radial tire construction
·         Most tires today are radial, but you may see a “B” or “D” on the tire, indicating the tire is a bias ply tire. 
Wheel Diameter – “16”
·         Diameter of the wheel
·         Measured in inches
Service Description
Load Rating/Index – “92”
·         Maximum amount of weight a tire can safely carry
·         Ranges from 0 to 279
Speed Rating – “V”
·         Match the speed capacity of the tire with the top speed capacity of the vehicles to which it is applied
·         Ranges from A to Y (not entirely in alphabetical order)
UTQG Rating
·         Uniform Tire Quality Grades
·         Three Components
o    Tread wear Rating:  measurement of the tire’s durability
o    Traction Rating:  measurement of the tire’s ability to stop on a straight, wet surface
o    Temperature Rating:  measurement of a tire’s resistance to heat generation under normal operating conditions at the recommended inflation pressures.

DOT   -  Department of Transportation Safety Code

This assures that your tire complies with all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada safety standards. After the DOT insignia is your tire’s identification number, which begins with the tire’s manufacturer and plant code where the tire was manufactured (two numbers or letters).
