Oil pulling is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy that helps cleanse the body by detoxifying and cleaning teeth and gums. This is a wonderful, all-around home treatment for oral health.  Oil pulling will also make your teeth whiter while it removes harmful bacteria and reduces inflammation. What's not to like?

Oil pulling has been used in India and Asia for 3,000 years, where it is used to treat about 30 or more systemic diseases. This natural remedy was only introduced to the West about 20 years ago.  It is safe, easy, and inexpensive.

What is Oil Pulling?

There are at least 3,000 years of testimonials as to the effectiveness of this traditional Ayurvedic medical treatment -- and it's safe, easy and effective!

First thing in the morning, before brushing teeth or eating, swish one teaspoon to one tablespoon of natural, food-quality oil (sesame, coconut, olive, sunflower or safflower) in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. You must do it this long for it to work.
Do not gargle in your throat.
The oil will be milky and foamy when ‘done’.
Spit out, do not swallow the oil with all the 'bad stuff'.  If you have a septic system, spit oil into trash can instead of sink (in order to avoid potential plumbing problems.)
Rinse mouth thoroughly with warm water.
Brush teeth.
Your mouth feels clean and fresh.

How Does Oil Pulling Work?

The theory behind this home treatment is that as the oil swishes around teeth and gums it ‘pulls’ bacteria and other debris into the oil, detoxifying the mouth.

Our mouths are laboratories breeding billions of nasty critters: viruses, bacteria (Streptococcus), parasites and fungi (Candida) and all of their toxic waste products.  All of the above contribute to gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other oral problems. This toxicity is also held to be at least partially responsible for many other diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, eczema and chronic infections. Some oils seem to help with weight loss.

Getting rid of these unwanted troublemakers in our mouths is one less problem for our immune systems to have to deal with. If this alternative remedy did nothing other than aid our immune systems (it does a lot more!), it would be worth doing for that alone.

The oils used for Oil Pulling vary widely. However, the most popular oil is sesame oil, followed by coconut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil and safflower oil. on the Table of Contents on this page, take a look at Sandy’s Oil Pulling Compilation. She listed the benefits reported for many different oils. Some people use the same oil all of the time, others switch oils periodically.

Scientific studies have generally focused on how effective oil pulling is when compared to various mouthwashes or other oral health drugs and products and outcomes varied.

What is oil pulling?

oil pulling or oil swishing, is an ancient ayurvedic simple cost effective natural remedy procedure that involves pulling or swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits.

It is mentioned in the Ayurvedic text Charaka Samhita where it is called Kavala Gandusha or Kavala Graha and is claimed to cure about 30 systemic diseases ranging from headache, migraine to diabetes and asthma.

Oil pulling has risen from an incomprehensible, ancient  Ayurvedic  natural remedy technique to an  effective self help nature cure  method for restoring and maintaining overall  health.

The effect of this healing process is developed by the intense movement of oil in the oral cavity.

In many chronic disorders and germ-play and inflammatory foci, which tend to stick to the tooth roots.

The teeth and their roots extend far into the jaw bone and their cavities. These cavities are the body's own defense system. Microbes that enter the tooth necks in these cavities found in this damp, warm and poorly vascularized environment, the ideal conditions in order to establish itself. It developed what are known as "dental foci" that damage the body with their metabolic products. The immune system is weak, then the herd size and load. Larger lesions are radiographically visible, they not only damage to the teeth and cross-charge your metabolism and the immune system, but  rather they also have remote effects on internal organs. Loaded so that each tooth hob tooth a specially assigned to internal organ.

The movement of the sunflower oil in the mouth causes a marked mucosal and tissue perfusion. Vitamins and minerals of sunflower oil to be absorbed by the mucous membranes during the same time, oil seeds to the necks of teeth and gums absorbs toxins and removes them from the body.

oil-pulling-method Step by Step(Updatedon Mar 9th 2014)

Step1:

First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of sunflower or sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth. We don't receommend doing this process at any other time. Children can also do this with less quantity of oil provided they have control and practice not  to swallow the oil.

Step 2:

Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it.  Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it.  Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you're putting too much into it.  Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you'll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon. There is no right way or wrong way to swish and pull oil. Don't focus on doing it right. Do it with very natural movement. Do this gently, not vigorously, in a relaxed way for about 20 minutes.
If you have the unbearable urge to swallow and If it becomes too unpleasant, spit out and try again. It can be a bit unpleasant at first when you’re not used to it, but soon won’t be bothersome at all, just like brushing your teeth.
When the oil has become saturated with the toxins it has pulled out, it may become whitish and a thinner, milky consistency, depending on the type of oil used. Each time you oil pull, it can take a different amount of time to get to that point, so 20 minutes is a general rule of thumb, but you can experiment with this.
If you spit out before 20 minutes. start again, the process is to make the oil swish enough time in your mouth so that it becomes a white thik substance which is a indication of process completion.

Step3:

As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, Spit the oil out, then rinse the mouth with warm salt water. ( Just use normal table salt). Salt water rinsing isn’t absolutely necessary, but is very helpful as an antimicrobial and to soothe any inflammation and proven to be effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left out in the mouth.

You can do the oil pulling every morning if you like, or several times a week. Because oilpulling method can be detoxifying, you might want to take a break sometimes. one immediate benefit everyone gets is, whiter teeth, clean mouth . There’s no rule about frequency - judge according to your own experience.

Pl. understand that this process works better in the morning. Don't try to do this any time of the day. If for some reason it is absolutely not possible for you to pratice this method in the morning, you can do this on an empty stomach at any time of the day. Empty stomach means the food is digested completely. Ideally after three or four hours of you taking any food. ( Lot depends on the food you are eating).

oil-pulling common questions and concerns:

Q: Should I brush before Oilpulling?
No, there’s no need to. It’s important to brush after oilpulling and clean the mouth thoroughly after toxins are drawn out with salt and water as explained before.

Q: When oil becomes white after 5 min? 10 min? 15 min???
There’s no rule of thumb different oils will behave differently, so,pl. don't pay attention to when the oil becomes white. Do the oilpulling for 20 min and you shall notice that oil becomes white.

Q: I was only able to do it for about few minutes, Is it normal?.
It is very common for many. Because we are not tuned take oil in our mouth and for first few times there would be some difficulty. But pl. note you would be amazed by how quickly you can get  used to it! It helps if you think about keeping the oil around your teeth and not toward the back of your mouth. Keeping the head tilted down a bit can help with that. Five minutes may be all you need, but you may also be able to increase the
time because it will become more comfortable. Experiment  and you’ll find out what works best for you.

Q: I can’t  help swallowing a little during OP. Is that harmful?
If you need to swallow a bit during oilpulling, the toxins being drawn out can usually be handled by the digestive system and eliminated properly. When you feel the urge to swallow, just spit the whole thing and restart.

Q: I could only do OP for a few minutes, as my mouth was getting tired.
You’re probably doing it too vigorously. Just Relax and do the swishing in a more relaxed way.

Q: Reasons for doing oilpulling on empty stomach
First, it helps not to have a full stomach if you get a little queasy from the oil pulling experience before you get used to it. Second, the detoxifying effect is a bit stimulating, whereas digestion involves the parasympathetic nervous system, so those are opposite functions. Eating something light may not be a problem, and you can judge by how you feel. If you can oil pull first thing in the morning, that takes care of that problem.

Q: After oilpulling it never turns in to white
The idea is , The viscosity and color should change significantly, but the color depends on so many factors, and can even be slightly different each time. A milky or creamy color is fine.

Q: How much salt should be used for rinsing after oilpulling?
Only use as concentrated a solution as you can comfortably take. Adjust  the amount  if  it’s too salty or if you can stand it a bit saltier. once it reaches a point which is intense salty for you, rinse with that water. When you are rinsing you shall fee that you are doing that with salt water.

Q: Does the toothbrush become full of toxins from Oilpulling?
Keep your toothbrush clean by letting it dry out completely between uses. Use one in the morning and a different one at night.

Q: Are there any diet restrictions with Oilpulling?
No actual diet  restrictions per se, but  oilpulling will work better the more you eat a diet that is right for you individually. You can eat  right after oilpulling, no problem.

Oil for Oil pulling

Ayurveda traditionally recommended certain oils for oilpulling, Dr.Karach recommended sunflower oil, an alternative recommended oil is only sesame oil.
People will have somewhat different experiences with different oils. You can experiment, trying different types of oils to see which one feels best to you. You can also experiment with oil pulling for a longer or shorter duration, and doing it more or less often. The limiting factor for many people is palatability.
Sesame oil is more warming than other oils and may be more gently detoxifying than other oils that are “colder”  energetically. It has a somewhat strong sesame flavor, which is a familiar food taste for most people. Sunflower oil has a milder taste if you prefer that.

Coconut oil is a familiar taste for many people. It has a cooler energy than sesame oil, so it’s good for people who tend to have a warmer constitution or condition of heat. Some people have reported that coconut oil is more strongly detoxifying, which isn’t always a good thing for some people, so it’s best to be cautious and go slowly.
As we have explained number of times before the oilpulling method and oilpulling cure is very individual. That said, the oil that is the most commonly used traditionally is sesame oil. If you’re okay with the taste, you could start there and see how it goes.

Q: Is it  necessary to use cold-pressed, unrefined oil? I am seeing only refined oil in the stores Can I buy refined oil for oil pulling?
It is recommended that organic, unrefined, cold pressed oils with the life force of the core substances in that oil are intact. Use the best quality you can get —unrefined, cold-pressed, which will not contain chemical residues.
I
f you have access to only refined oil, start with sunflower or sesame oil, both of them shall work effectively.

Q: Which oils shall be avoided for oilpulling method?
Avoid all poor quality oils that you wouldn’t want to eat. Those include corn oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil and soy oil, and those that go rancid very quickly such as flax oil.

Q: In most stores I am only seeing expeller pressed oils, but not cold pressed. What is your recommendation?
Cold-pressed, or expeller-pressed oil is just a better quality oil that doesn’t contain chemical residues, and is better nutritionally. Refined oils are high heated which damages the quality to some degree, but still they will work fine for the purposes of oilpulling.
The expulsion process used for expeller pressed oils does generate a certain amount of heat, depending on the type of seed or nut and how much pressure it takes to get the oil out of it. But this is very low compared to the high heat method used for refined oils. Look for a brand of oil with unrefined, organic sunflower oil or sesame oil.

Q: For oilpulling is grape seed oil suitable ?
oilpulling method is a natural remedy process where you are expected to use the oils which are close to the nature and could easily produce manually with a mortar and pestle. oils like grape seed oil, we use an industrial process and there will be residues of solvents. If you could find an organic, cold pressed grape seed oil, that would be a better choice. we are not sure if it’s possible to completely cold press grape seed, as there’s less oil in grape seeds than in many other seeds, and it’s harder to extract it. And it would probably be more expensive than the other recommended oils. Polyunsaturated fats are generally not as good as monounsaturated or saturated, but grape seed oil has other benefits and can be used in small amounts.

Q:can we use toasted oils for oilpulling?
Try to avoid toasted oils, as the high heat damages them.

Q: Can we add oil of oregano or other essential oils to the oil used in oilpulling?
Pl. don't add any oil to the the oil you have selected for oilpulling. For ex: if you choose sunflower oil, just use that oil. It is our modern day life style that we want to add flavor to every thing in life. Unfortunately, by doing so often times we are messing with the natural qualities.

A study was published in India recently comparing the effectiveness of “oil pulling” versus chlorhexidine mouthwash in preventing bad breath and the organisms that cause it. It was a small sample size for a study, but oil pulling was more effective than the chlorhexidine mouthwash when measuring marginal gingival index, plaque index, and organoleptic breath assessment. The study notes that “Oil pulling therapy has been used extensively as a traditional Indian folk remedy for many years for strengthening teeth, gums, and jaws and to prevent decay, oral malodor, bleeding gums and dryness of throat, and cracked lips.” Oil pulling is gargling and swishing oil around in your mouth to clean your gums and teeth.
