Alternative medicine

Alternative medicine has been described as "any of various systems of healing or treating disease (as chiropractic, homeopathy, or faith healing) not included in the traditional medical curricula taught in the United States and Britain".^[1]

Alternative medicine practices are often based in belief systems not derived from modern science. Alternative medicines may therefore incorporate spiritual, metaphysical, or religious underpinnings, untested practices, non-Western medical traditions, or newly developed approaches to healing. If an alternative medical approach, initially untested, is subsequently shown to be safe and effective, it may then be adopted by conventional practitioners and no longer considered "alternative".

"Alternative medicine" is often categorized together with complementary medicine using the umbrella term Complementary and Alternative Medicine or CAM.

 병원의 표준화된 치료 이외에 환자들이 이용하는 요법을 말한다. 증명되지 않은, 비정통적·보조적인 요법으로 과학자나 임상의사의 평가에 근거하여 증명되지 않았거나 현재 권장되지 않는 예방·진단·치료에 사용되는 검사나 치료의 방침을 통틀어 지칭한다.

대체의학이 다루는 범위는 증상완화에서 치료를 목표로 하는 것, 특정한 의학적 문제에서 인간에 관한 전체적인 것, 가정의 쉬운 처방에서 복잡하고 제조된 것, 매우 효과적인 것에서부터 해악이 큰 것 등이다. 그러나 그 효과에 대한 객관적이고 과학적인 근거가 부족해 제도권 의료계에서는 정식으로 인정하지 않는 치료법이다.

미국의 국립위생연구소(NIH)가 분류한 대체의학은 식이·영양, 정신·신체기법, 생전자기장(bioelectromagnetics), 전통요법 및 민간요법, 약물 및 생리적 치료, 수지요법(manual healing methods), 약초요법 등이다.
