My fellow citizens:

친애하는 국민 여러분,

 

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.

저는 우리 선조들의 희생을 기리는 마음으로, 여러분들이 제게 보내준 신뢰에 감사하는 마음으로, 그리고 우리 앞에 해야할 일을 놔두고 겸허한  마음으로 오늘 이 자리에 섰습니다.

 

I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

저는 부시 대통령이 나라를 위해 헌신하신데 대하여 또한 정권 이양 과정에서 보여준 아낌없는 배려와 협조에 대하여 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.

 

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms.

이제 마흔 네 명이 대통령직 직무수행 선서를 했습니다.  말들은 떠오르는 번영의 조류와 잔잔한 평화의 물결의 시대에 행해졌습니다. 그러나 늘 선서는  먹구름이  끼고  폭풍우가 몰아오는 와중에 행해집니다.

 

At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

이러한 때에 미국은 고위 직에 있는 자들의 재주나 비전 때문이 아니라 우리 모든 국민들이 우리 조상들의 이념에 충실하고 건국문서( 건국이념)에 진실하였기 때문에 잘 해 나왔습니다. 지금껏 그러해왔듯이  이 세대에서도 그래야 합니다.

 

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

우리가 지금 위기에 봉착해 있다는 것은 주지의 사실입니다. 우리나라는 널리 그물처럼  뻗어있는 폭력과 증오에 대항하는 전쟁을 하고 있습니다.  일부 인사들의 탐욕과 무책임으로, 그리고 어려운 선택을 하여 새 시대에 대비하여 나라를 준비하는데 있어 전반적으로 실패한 결과로 인하여  우리 경제는 심각하게 약해졌습니다.  집을 잃고, 직장에서 해고당하고 기업들은 문을 닫았습니다. 의료 비용은 너무나 비싸고, 학교들은 너무 많이 실패하고, 우리가 힘을 사용하는  방식이 우리의  적들을 강화시키고 우리 지구를  위협하고 있다는 더 많은 증거들이 매일같이 드러나고 있습니다.

 

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

이러한 것들은 바로 각종 자료와 통계에 따른 위기에 관한 신호입니다. 아메리카의 쇠락은 불가피하다는, 그리고 다음 세대는 안목을 낮추어 잡아야 한다는 두려움이 전 미국에 흐르는 것은 측정은 안되더라도 심각하다 하지 않을 수 없습니다.

 

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met.

오늘 저는 여러분께  우리가 맞이한 도전들은 현실로 다가와 있다고 말씀 드립니다. 매우 심각하고 그리고 많습니다. 그 도전들은 쉽게 또는 짧은 기간에 해결되지는 않을 것입니다. 그러나  이것만은 알아두십시오. 우리는 결국 해낼 것입니다.

 

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

오늘 우리는 두려움을 넘어 희망을, 갈등과 불화를 넘어 목적을 지향하는 단결을 선택했기에  모였습니다.

 

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

오늘 우리는 우리의 정치를 너무나 오랫동안 옥죄어왔던 사소한 불만들과 거짓 약속들, 상호비방과 낡은 독단들에 종식을 선언하기 위해  왔습니다.

 

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.

미국은 여전히 젊은 나라입니다. 그러나 이제는 성서의 말씀대로 어린애 같은 짓을 버려야 합니다.

 

The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

우리의 인내심을 다시 확인할 때가, 더 나은 역사를 선택할 때가, 세대를 이어서 물려받은 소중한 선물(고귀한 이상)을 진척시킬  때가 왔습니다. 즉 만인은 평등하고 자유로우며 또한 모두가 충분한 행복을 추구할 기회를 가질 자격이 있다는 하느님의 약속 말입니다.

 

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the path for the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

미국의 위대함을 다시금 확인하면서 우리는 그 위대함이 결코 저절로 주어진 것이 아니라  그것은 노력하여 얻어지는 것임을 이해 합니다. 우리의 여정은 결코 쉬운 지름길도 아니었고 작은 성과에 안주하는 것도 아니었습니다. 그 길은 일보다는 여가를 선호하거나 부와 명예의 즐거움만을 추구하는 소심한 자들을 위한 길이 결코 아니었습니다. 그 길은 자유와 번영을 위한 길고 험난한 길을 우리와 함께 걸어온 위험을 무릅쓰고, 실천하고, 무언가를 만들어 내는 분들의 길이었습니다. 어떤이는 알려졌지만  자신들의 하는 일에 드러나지 않았던 더 많은 분들이 있었습니다. 그 분들이 번영과 자유를 향한 길고 험한 길로 우리를 인도했습니다.

 

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

우리를 위해, 그들은 자신들의 얼마 안되는 재산을 꾸려 새로운 삶을 찾아 대양을 건넜습니다.

우리를 위해, 그들은 노동착취공장에서 힘써 일해서 서부에 정착했고 채찍질을 감내하며 굳은 땅을 일궜습니다.

 

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn. Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

우리를 위해, 그들은   콩코드와 게티스버그, 노르망디와  케산 같은 곳에서 싸우다가 목숨을 바쳤습니다. 쉽없이 되풀이 해서 이들은 우리가 더 나은 삶을 살 수 있도록 자신들의 손의 살갗이 벌겋게 닳을  때까지 싸우고 희생하고 또 일했습니다. 그들은 우리 개인적 야망을  합한 것 이상으로, 모든 출신이나 부나 당파를 뛰어넘어 우리 미국을 더 중하게 보았습니다.

 

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

이것이 바로 오늘날 우리가 계속 걸어가고 있는 여정입니다. 우리는 여전히 지구상에서 가장 번영되고 가장 강한 나라입니다. 우리의 근로자들은 이 위기가 시작됐을 때와 다름없이 생산적입니다. 지난 주, 지난 달, 아니 작년과 다름없이 여전히 우리의 정신은 창의적이고 우리의 재화와 용역을 모두가 필요로 합니다. 우리의 역량은 여전히 줄어들지 않았습니다. 개혁을 싫어하거나 편협한 이익을 보호하거나 불쾌한 결정들을 뒤로 미루는 그런 시기는 분명히 지나갔습니다. 오늘부터 우리는 스스로를 추스려 힘을 내고 먼지를 털고 일어나 미국을 재건하는 일을 다시 시작해야 합니다.

 

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and

we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth.

We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together.

We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost.

We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories.

And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.

All this we can do. And all this we will do.

어디를 둘러 봐도 해야 할 일이 있습니다. 경제 상황은 대담하고 신속한 행동을 요구하고 있습니다. 우리는  새로운 일자리를 창출하고 성장을 위한 새로운 기반을 만들기 위해 행동할 것입니다. 우리는 상업에 활력을 불어넣고 우리를 보다 가깝게 묶어줄 도로와 교량, 전력망과 디지털 통신망을 건설할 것입니다. 우리는 과학을 제자리로 돌려놓을 것입니다. 우리는 건강관리의 질을 향상시키면서 비용은 낮출 신과학기술을 활용할 것입니다. 우리는 자동차에 연료를 제공하고 공장을 가동하기 위해 태양 에너지, 풍력, 지력을 이용할 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 새 시대의 요구에 부응할 수 있도록  학교와 대학과 종합대학을 변혁할 것입니다. 이 모든 것을 우리는 할 수 있고 또 해내겠습니다.

 

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

지금 우리가 밝힌 포부의 규모에 대해  그렇게 많은 거대한 계획들을 감내할 수 없을 것이라며 의심을 품는 사람들이 있습니다. 그들의 기억이 짧은 것이다.  그들은 이 나라가 이미 해낸 일들 즉 자유로운 사람들이 머리속에 그린것이 공통목표가 되고, 필요가 용기를 주었을 때 성취해 낸 것들을 기억에서 잊어버린 것입니다, .

 

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply.

냉소주의자들은 그들의 기반이 변했다는 사실과 우리 국민을 오랫동안 피곤하게 해왔던 낡은 정치적 주장들이 더 이상 적용될 수 없다는 사실을 이해하지 못하고 있습니다.

 

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

오늘의 문제는 큰 정부인가 작은 정부인가 하는 게 아니라 정부가 제대로 기능하고 있는가 하는 것입니다. 즉 정부가 가족들로 하여금 타당한 보수의 직업을 찾을 수 있도록, 여유있는 보살핌을 받을 수 있도록, 또는 품위있는 은퇴생활을 할 수 있도록 돕고 있는가 하는 것입니다. 그럴수 있으면 우리는 전진할 것입니다. 그러하지 못하면 프로그램들은 끝날 것입니다. 공공자금을 관리하는 자들은 책임지고 돈을 현명하게 지출하고 악습들을 고치고, 투명하게 일을 해야 될 것입니다.  그래야만  국민과 정부 사이에 중요한 신뢰가 회복될 수 있기 때문입니다.

 

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous.

또한  현안 문제는 시장이 잘 나가고 있느냐가 아닙니다.   부를 만들고 자유를 신장하는데 시장의 힘은 비길 데 없는 것입니다. 그러나 이번 위기는  감시의 눈이 없이는 시장이 통제 할 수 없이 돌아 버린다는 것과 한 국가가 잘 나가는 사람들 편에 서 있다가는 길게 발전하지 못한다는 사실을 각성하게 했습니다.

 

The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of

charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

우리 경제의 성공은 항상 국내총생산의 크기에만 따르는 것이 아니라  국가의 번영이 미치는 정도 즉 의욕적으로 사는 모든 사람들에게 잘 살 수 있는 기회를 넓혀줄 수 있는 력량에 따릅니다. 이것이 우리의 공동 선( 목표, 이익)을 향한 가장 확실한 길이기 때문입니다.

 

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake.

우리의 공동 방어( 국방)에 관해서 말하자면  새로운 정부는 우리의 안전과 우리의 생각에서먄 선택하는 잘못을 거부합니다. 우리의 건국 선조들은 우리가 좀처럼 상상하기 힘든 위험에 직면해서도  법의 다스림과 인간의 권리를  명확히하는 헌장을 만들었고  대를 이어서 피로써 지켜왔습니다. 이러한 이상들은 여전히 이세상을 밝게 비추고 있으며 우리는 일시적 편리를 위하여 그런 이상들을 던져 버리지는 않을 것입니다.

 

And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more. Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

그리고 큰 나라의 수도들에서 제 아버지가 태어난 곳과 같은 작은 마을에 이르기까지 오늘 이 자리를 지켜보고 있는 모든 다른 나라의 국민과 정부들께도 이렇게 말씀드리는 바입니다. 미국은 평화와 품위가 있는 미래를 추구하는 모든 나라와 모든 사람에게  친구이고  우리 미국은 한 번 더 이끌어 나갈 준비가 되어 있다는 것을 알기 바랍니다. 그리고 이전 세대들이 미사일과 탱크만이 아닌 견고한 동맹과 지속적인 신념으로 파시즘과 공산주의를 눌렀던 사실을 떠올려 보십시오. 그분들은 힘만으로는 우리 자신을 보호할 수 없으며 또한  우리가 원하는 대로 할 수 없다는 점을 이해하고 있었습니다. 대신 그분들은 우리가 힘을 신중히 사용함으로써 힘이 더 커진다는 것 즉 우리의 안전은 정당성과 힘과 겸손과 자제로 부터 나온다는 것을 알았습니다.

 

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

우리는 이 유산의 수호자들입니다.  한 번 더 이런 원칙들에 따른다면 더 많은 노력과 더 많은 협력과 이해가 요구될 수 있는  새로운 위협들에 대하여 대처해 나갈 수 있습니다. 우리는 책임있게 이라크를 이라크 국민들에게 넘겨주고 어렵게 얻어낸 아프가니스탄의 평화도 굳히기 시작할 것입니다. 우리는 오랜 우방들과 과거의 적국들과 함께  핵위험을 줄이고 지구 온난화의 잡것을 몰아내기 위해 끈질기게 일할 것입니다.  우리는 우리가 해 나가는 방식에 대해 변명하지도 않을 것이고 우리의 방식을 고수하는데 있어 흔들리지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 테러나 살육에 의하여 자신들의 목적을 관철하려는 자들에게 우리는 이렇게 일러둡니다. 우리의 정신은 보다 강하고 부러지지 않는다. 너희는 우리를 이길수 없다. 우리는 너희를 패망시킬 것이다.

 

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

우리는 우리의 다양하게 짜 맞추어진 문화유산이 약점이 아니라 강점이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리나라는 기독교도와 이슬람교도, 유태교도와 힌두교도 그리고 무신론자들로 이루어진 국가입니다. 우리나라는 지구상 곳곳에서 온 다 언어와 다 문화로 이루어졌습니다. 우리는 남북전쟁과 인종차별의 혹독한 맛을 보았고, 또한 보다 강하고 단결된 모습으로 어둠으로 부터 나왔습니다.  우리는 다음과 같은 사실을 믿어야 됩니다. 즉 오랜 증오는 언젠가 사라진다는 것과 부족적 혈연은 머지않아 와해된다는것, 세계가 점점 작아지고  공통된 인간애가 제 모습을 드러내 보일 것이라는 것, 그리고 우리 미국이 새로운 평화의 시대로 안내하는 역할을 반드시 해야한다는 것입니다.

 

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

이슬람 세계 여러분, 여러분은 우리 미국이 상호이해와 상호존중에 기반한 새로운  방식을 추구하고 있습니다. 분쟁의 씨를 뿌리거나 이슬람 사회 내부의 악폐를 서방의 탓으로 돌리고자 하는 전세계 이슬람 세계의 지도자들 여러분, 여러분의 국민들은 여러분들이 파괴한 것에 대한 것이 아니고  여러분들이 건설한 것을 기초로 여러분들을 심판할 것이라는 사실을 알아야 합니다. 부패와 속임수 그리고 반대에 대한 무시를 통한 힘에 매달리고 있는 자들이여,  현재  당신들은 역사의 그릇된 쪽에 서 있지만 우리는 당신들이 주먹을 펴고자 한다면 협조의 손을 내밀 것이라는 것을 알기 바랍니다.

 

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds.

And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

가난한 나라의 국민들이여, 우리는 당신들의 농장을 번성케 하고 깨끗한 물이 흐르게 하며 굶주린 육체와 굼주린 마음에 양분을 제공하기 위해 당신들과 나란히 일을 하겠다는 약속을 드립니다.

또한 우리처럼 비교적 부유한 나라의 국민들이여,  우리는 더 이상 우리 국경 밖의 고통에 대하여 무관심할 수 없으며 또한 더 이상 세계의 자원을 결과에 대한 고려 없이 낭비하지 않을 것이라는 말씀을 드립니다.  세계는 변했고 또 우리도 그에 따라 변해야 하기 때문입니다.

 

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

우리 앞에 펼쳐진 길을 생각하면서 우리는 바로 이 순간에도 머나먼 사막과 산악지대에서 순찰 을 하는 용감한 미국인들을 겸허히 감사하는 마음으로 기억하고 있습니다.  그들은 알링턴 국립묘지에 잠들어 있는 영웅들이 시대를 지나면서 우리들에게 속삭여주듯이  오늘날 우리에게 뭔가 할 말이 있을 것입니다. 우리는 그들이 단지 자유의 수호자이기 때문만이 아니라 봉사정신 즉 자기 자신보다 더 큰 어떤 것에서 의미를 찾으려는 의지를 몸소 체화했기 때문에 우리는 그들에게 경의를 표합니다. 그리고 한 세대를 규정지을 만한 지금 이 순간에 우리 모두의 마음에 깃들어야 할 정신이야 말로 정확히 말해서 이 봉사정신입니다.

 

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

정부가 할 수 있고 해야 되는 일에 관하여  의지하는 것은 궁극적으로 우리국민들의 신임과 결의입니다.

우리가 어두운 시간을 통과하게 하는 것은 제방이 무너졌을 때 낯선 이를 집안에 들이는 친절함이나 친구가 직장을 잃는 걸 보기보다는 자신의 근로시간을 줄이려 하는 비이기심 같은 것들입니다.  연기로 가득찬 계단에 뛰어드는 소방관의 용기나 아이를 키우는 부모의 마음, 이런 것이 결국 우리의 운명을 결정할 것입니다.

 

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

우리의 도전은 새로울 것입니다. 우리가 그 도전들을 맞이할 때 사용할 수단들도 새로울 겁니다. 하지만 우리의 성공이 달려 있는  가치들 즉 정직과 근면, 용기와 공정성, 인내와 호기심, 성실성과 애국심과 같은 가치들은 오래되었고  옳은 것들입니다. 이런것들은 우리 역사를 통틀어  진보의 숨은 힘이 되어 왔습니다. 지금 요구되는 것은 바로 이런 진실된 것들로 되돌아 가는 것니다. 지금 우리에게 요구되는 것은  책임감이 살아 있는 새로운 시대입니다., 즉 전 미국인이  우리 자신, 우리 나라, 그리고 세계에 대한 의무를 인식하는 것입니다. 여기서 의무란 못마땅해 하면서 받아들이는 의무가 아니라 우리의 모든 것을 어려운 일에 쏟아주는 것이 우리에게 정신적 만족을 주는 것이요  미국의 특질을 잘 규정하는 것이라는 인식을 가지고 확고히 그리고 즐거이 붙잡는 그런 의무입니다

 

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

이것이 바로 시민권에 대한 댓가이자 약속입니다.

이것이 신이 우리들로 하여금 불확실한 운명을 스스로 만들어 나가도록 한다는 인식에 대한 우리의 확신의 원천입니다.

이것이 바로 우리의 자유와 신조의 의미입니다.  모든 인종과 신앙의  사람들이 이 거대한 취임식 행사에 함께할 수 있는 이유이고,  60년이 채 안되는 얼마 전에 동내 식당에서 조차 거절당하던 아버지를 둔 아들이 지금 여러분 앞에서 가장 신성한 서약하려고 서 있을 수 있는 이유가 되기도 합니다..

 

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet it."

우리 이날을 기억해 둡시다. 우리가 현재 누구이며 또 우리가 얼마나 먼 길을 여행해 왔는지에 관하여.  미국이 태어나는 해에, 가장 추운 달에,  한 작은 무리의 애국자들이 얼어붙은 강가의 꺼져가는 모닥불 옆에 몸을 움츠리고 모였습니다. 수도는 버려졌었습니다. 적군은 전진하고 있었습니다. 흰눈은 피로 물들었습니다. 혁명의 결과가 가장 의심스럽던 그 순간에 우리의 건국선조들은 이런 말을을 국민에게 읽도록 명하였습니다.

"미래의 세상에 들려주자, 한 겨울 희망과 미덕이외는 아무것도 살아남을 없었던 때에, 도시와 시골이 공동의  위험에 놀라서  그것에 맞서기 위해 무두 나섰다." 고.

 

America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

미국이여. 공동의 위험에 직면하여, 이러한 어려운 때에, 이와같은 불변의 말씀들을 상기해 봅시다. 희망과 미덕을 가지고  한 번 더 한파에 용감히 나섭시다. 그리고 어떤 폭풍우가 오더라도 참아 냅시다. 우리의 후손들이 이렇게 말하도록 합시다. 우리가 시험에 들게 됐을 때 우리는 이 여정을 마다하지 않았다고, 결코 등을 돌리거나 멈칫하지 않았다고. 수평선 멀리 눈을 고정시키고 우리위에 하느님의 은총이 함께하여  커다란 신의 선물인 자유를  실현하였고 이를 미래의 후손들에게 안전하게 전해 주었다고.
