Striated Muscles

Skeletal muscles are excitable by neuronal stimulation and as result they contract. Skeletal do not have an intrinsic mechanism for elongation but have elastic properties that restore them to resting length. Additionally skeletal muscles can be extended by the contraction of the antagonistic muscle.

A skeletal muscle is composed of an external epimysium which encloses several fasciculi each containing many muscle fibers(muscle cells). The attachment to the bone is via a tendon which is made of connective tissue.

Skeletal muscle cells are multinucleated because they consist of several cells that have fused together. Muscle cells contain many mitochondria and the characteristic protein filaments(myosin and actin) which are responsible for the muscle contraction.

Terminology : the prefix sarco- and myo- both relate to muscle. The cell membrane of a muscle fibre is referred to as sarcolemma and the endoplasmic reticulum is the sarcoplasmic reticulum while the protein filaments are referred to a myofilaments.

The T-tubules are not tubes but invaginations of the sarcolemma. They play an important role in transmitting depolarisation to the inner part of the cell.
